Simple Reclaimed Tablescape

With the kitchen cabinets filled with so many empty jars, I decided to made it a mission to figure out something to do with them. So I came up with this simple and unintentionally romantic tablescape. I'm not claiming that this is terribly original but I think it looks pretty nice. I just popped some tea lights in the collection of glass jars and arranged them on my DIY table runner made of reclaimed strips of denim. If I had a date for Valentines day I would definitely be serving diner at this romantic table.

"The Commandant's House, where Commodore Matthew C. Perry lived in the 1840s, as it looked in December 1977. The distinguished Vinegar Hill home, built between 1805-06, is not part of the Admiral's Row property and is now privately owned."

The Daily News posted some photos of Admiral's Row back in the day. Admiral's row is a series of buildings along Flushing Avenue next to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. These buildings used to house the naval officers. The Row was last occupied in the 1970s and has now all but turned to rubble. Unfortunately or fortunately the several acer lot is going to be redeveloped. Two of the original building will be restored and the rest knocked to the ground to make way for a massive grocery store, retail shops, and more industrial space. If your in Brooklyn I suggest getting down to the Wallabout neighborhood and take a look before these historic buildings become history. This week marks the start of the restoration process on the two building slated to survive the revamp.

She doesn't quite create sculptures but two dimensional wood illustrations in three dimensions. A Primitive Face

I posted some of Barcelonian artist, Guim Tió Zarraluki's work back in 2010. I loved his simplification of the photographic image into primitives of the former image. Since then he has refined his process. Now approaching a portrait with a sort of check list of features, round circular eyes, shallow chin, contrast nose, photographic lips, etc. His work has developed a stronger sense of color and an interest in pattern, welcomed additions to the artists former repertoire. Crock Pot Chicken

When I was home for the holidays last month, my mother mentioned you could cook a whole chicken in a crock pot and it would come out tasting like a delicious rotisserie chicken. Well guess what, it's true! I cooked a whole chicken in my crock pot for about 6 hours at low and it came out great and it was so easy! See how simply it was after the break.

Crock Pot Chicken

First rub a whole chicken with your choice of spices, I choose to use paprika, pepper and salt. I then stuffed some sprigs of rosemary inside the chicken and under the skin. The next step is to spray the crock pot with some cooking spray or rub the interior of the pot with oil. Then fill the bottom of the pot with carrots and sliced onions.

Then you will create 3 to 4 alumni foil balls. You will place these in next to lift the chicken up from the bottom of the crock pot to prevent it from cooking in its' own juices. Then put in the chicken. cook for 4 to 6 hours on low until the chicken is no longer pink. Serve on a plater and enjoy!

Here are three pictures of Pauline Alden Ramsdell, my mother's mother. She's in the Swarthmore College laboratory examining tissue samples. She studied zoology at the Pennsylvania school and graduated in 1939. Her Senior year book states

"She is fond of water colors and Japanese prints, and wears purple continually. Her cheeks, which are continually that rosy color, add to the impression that Polly looks like a Botticellian edition of Bette Davis." The book also notes that she avoided live animal directions, played bridge, and enjoyed frequent trips to New York City.

Artist, Korehiko Hino's seems to live in an acid bright world of saucer eyed subjects. The 35 year old Japanese oil painter focuses heavily on rendering hyper realistic images of raw meat, flowers, and bug-eyed men and women. No matter the subject, Hino's work is rendered in the same complimentary palette of pinks, corals, and teals. The concept may seem eerie but the final result seems to always be stunningly beautiful. I certainly wouldn't mind a Hino goat head portrait in my collection nor would I mind taking a trip inside Hino's bazaar world.

Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes

It's hard to find good savory sweet potato recipes, so I had to come up with my own. My goal was to get rid of some ingredients I had around the kitchen and I think it was pretty successful. This definitely makes for a good side but needs a little something extra to hold it's own. You can get the recipe after the break.

Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Ingredients:
2 sweet potatoes
3 sprigs rosemary
1 tbsp butter
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1/2 large white onion (chopped)
2 large garlic cloves (minced)
1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
salt and pepper to taste
freshly grated parmesan

Directions:
Wash and peel sweet potatoes and cut into large cubes. Place in a large pot, cover with water. Boil the water and potatoes for 10 minutes or until tender. Drain water and set aside in a bowl. Melt butter at medium heat in the pot. Add onions, garlic, and rosemary and cook until onions are translucent. Remove rosemary sprigs with tongs and discard. Add sweet potatoes and chicken broth to the pot cook and for a addtional 5 minutess to combined flavors and cook down the stock. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Turn of heat. Crush potato cubes with a fork of masher. Using an immersion blender roughly blend the potatoes and onions to desired consistency. Scoop onto plates or bowl and garnish with rosemary sprig and freshly grated parmesan.

Makes approximately 3 servings.

The cover of the January/ February issue of Surface features the stunning Kenzo Spring 2012 collection created under the retail masters, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. l love the simple print and apparently CB2 did too. This month's issue of Martha Stewart Living feature some of these great knitting projects, perfect for working on by the warmth of a fire. I recently taught myself how crochet (with the help of this video) and was inspired to make a blanket simular to the one below ( I'll post my progress once things really start taking off) and I'm sure I'll end up making a matching pillow too. I suggest picking up this issue. There are plenty of other basic knitting projects and some great sandwich ideas too.

Butternut Squash Soup

I made this soup loosely based off of a recipe from Williams-Sonoma. I love this soup; the contrast between the sweet squash and onion with the salty pancetta is awesome. The recipe called for a jar of pureed butternut squash but I substituted it for homemade. This works as a simple dinner or an easy lunch that can be warmed up at work. Follow my recipe below:

Ingredients:
1 large (2 medium/small) butternut squash
1 chopped yellow onion
1 sprig of sage
1 tbs olive oil
3 1/4 cups chicken broth
2 tbs Marsala wine
4 oz. cubed pancetta
1 cup heavy cream
3 large cloves garlic (minced)
1 bunch chopped chives
salt and white pepper to taste

Directions:
Pre heat over to 350 degrees. Cut butternut squash(s) lengthwise. Remove seeds. place cut side down on backing sheet with lip. Cook in oven for 45 minutes. Remove and let cool. Once cool enough to hand scoop out flesh with a spoon an set aside.

In a large stock pot heat oil. Add pancetta and cook on medium heat until slightly crisp and brown, about 5 minutes. Remove pancetta leaving remaning oil in the pot. Place pancetta on a plate with paper towels to remove excess oil. Add onions to the pot and cook until semi-translucent. Add minced garlic and sage sprig, cook for three more minutes. Then add squash, chicken stock, and Marsala wine to the pot. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Simmer for another five minutes. Turn off the heat. Using an immersion blender, blend until smooth. Whisk in heavy cream until combined. Ladle into bowls and garnish with pancetta and chives.

Makes approximately six servings. (7 Weight Watchers Point Plus points per serving)

This Christmas I receive a wheel of Beekman 1802 Blaak Cheese, Blaak Onion Jam, and Rosemary Creamed Honey from my lovely parents. I also received a Nikon D3100 camera which you are now viewing pictures taken with that amazing piece of equipment.

I've wanted to get a bite of the Beekman ash coated cheese since the first episode of The Fabulous Beekman Boys. However, I unfortunately had no luck finding a NYC location that still had it stock, nor did I have the resources to purchase a 2 pound wheel. So to say I was ecstatic to finally get my hands/ mouth on a piece Christmas morning is a understatement.

I first have to say, don't eat the rind! The cheese gets a white mold that grows on it while aging. It smells horrible and tastes horrible too. It's technically fine to eat, however, if the Donner Party was offer Blaak cheese rinds, I swear, they still would have eaten each other!

The cheese, 60% unpasteurized goats milk and 40% cows milk made in Sharon Springs NY, taste great (minus the rind) with the sweet balsamic flavor of Blaak Onion Jam or the delicious rosemary infused honey, both available at Beekman1802.com. The Rosemary Honey is so good, I keep eating spoonfuls like lolly pops. I've currently have been enjoying a slice of cheese on a piece of crusty bread, but it's great on it's own and I can wait to start using it in a recipe or two.

I fell in love with these jackets and vests from Black Fleece, Thom Browne's line for Brooks Brothers, when they first came out. I'm liking Missoni's Pre Fall 2012 collection. I'm not usually a big Missoni fan, maybe after seeing Missoni for Target everywhere I became a little Missoni brainwashed. Brainwashed or not I think this unusual look book shoot really works. I love the bold color background with the abstract "art" on cinder blocks. It's surprisingly not distracting.

Kris Knight

Artist, Kris Knight has a fetish for pale-faced boys wearing ritualistic floral wreaths. I love the Canadian realist painter and his obvious obsession with the romanticism of youth. His affinity for rosy cheeked model-esque men has made him a master of painting translucent flesh in brief blocks of soft color. His work is mythical, eerie, and unquestionable beautiful. Despite being influenced by 18th century French portraiture, Knight's work is throughly modern.

I posted about the launch of the new eco-friendly mens underwear line, Gässling, just a short while ago and I can now give a personal review after receiving a pair of the Falsterbo Button Boxers in mint (pictured above). I normally wear American Apparel briefs but theses new boxers are giving my classic briefs some competition. They may be more than double the price but they are definitely worth it.

Christmas at Bergdorfs

I highly recommend checking out the windows at Bergdorfs on 5th Ave. The displays are quite spectacular. I saw them this weekend when my parents came into town to check out the holiday windows and get a bite to eat at one of my favorite Brooklyn restaurants, Pequena. The images don't do the windows justice, you must see them in person. Each window is filled with animals made of a single material i.e. paper. wood, sequens, yarn, bronze... It definitely worth the trip uptown!

I just wrapped up teaching my first semester of sophomore pattern making and draping at Pratt this week. My wonderful students just finished up their critique on their final project, a blouse and a coordinating skirt inspired by the FIT Daphne Guinness exhibition. Earlier in the semester we went to the exhibition and the students documented 10 looks that inspired them. However, I found little inspiration in the garments themselves. The most inspiring element of the exhibit was the video above. A preview of the film The Legend of Lady White Snake directed by Indrani and style by GK Reid. I've worked with GK before with the twentyten and watched Idrani, Markus, and GK on their Bravo show, Double Exposure. It was a pleasant surprise to learn of their involvement in this great film that really set the mood of the exhibit. It's quite a dramatic video with some stunning looks.

Pre Fall 2012: Proenza Schouler

Parkas, adirondacks, pull-cord waists, nylon shirts, and quilted dresses all come together to cement the modern day wardrobe of the chilly camper in Proenza Schouler's Pre Fall 2012 collection. However, the designers didn't take the camping influence so literally. You won't see amy hunter greens or camouflage prints of a traditional camper here. The palette is far from a camp out, bright red, blue, green, and orange are complimented by navy and black. This collections is a recent favorite of mine by the design dou and I can't help to call out the similarities to another favorite, Kenzo's Spring 2012 collection.

Colorful Strokes

Anthony Cudahy is a fellow Pratt Alum, having graduated this past May. His work consists mainly of portraiture painted in vibrant hues. His understanding of color is quite stunning. Cudahy's work is bold and subdued at the same time. His daring brush strokes and unique color pairings represent the bold exciting quality of a youthful artist while the still and somewhat mundane subject matter brings an ease to what could be a garish ensemble. Six Lee is a Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp grad whose vision of sliced and diced menswear is artfully presented in a film by video artist Frederik Heyman. A personal favorite of Lee's debut collection would be his pleated short seen in most of the looks. Six Lee is yet to find a retailer for his off beat menswear but hopefully his luck will turn in time for spring deliveries.

I always thought it strange that phrases like Peace on earth, Joy to the world, and Goodwill toward men are only tossed around durring the Christmas season. Jason Wu used the word 'regal' to describe Pre Fall 2012. A 35 look collection heavy with gowns, but you wont see any of those floor length sheaths here. Wu's day wear is much more noteworthy. Striped crotched sweaters, a fur trimmed plaid jacket with matching skirt, these are the pieces women wear everyday, the best part of a women's wardrobe. Evening wear is overly hyped, so here's my favorite day looks from the collection.

Pre Fall 2012: Pringle of Scotland

It's that time of the year again... Pre-Fall shows! Of the few houses to have released their pre fall collections, I'm most excited by Pringle of Scotland's graffiti inspired prints and classic "with a twist" patterned knits. This collection is the third for designer Alistair Carr, who seems to have taken the role of head designer of a heritage brand like Pringle with ease.
